A rigger is an individual who is responsible for the erection, operation and maintenance of stage rigging equipment. This role requires an individual to be physically fit and able to lift heavy objects, as well as having a good understanding of mechanical principles. A rigger must also be able to work at heights and in confined spaces.

Rigger Job Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and sketches to determine the specifications of the job.
  • Work with other tradespeople, such as electricians and carpenters, to complete the project.
  • Assemble and install scaffolding, rigging hardware, and lifting devices according to safety regulations.
  • Inspect all equipment before each use to ensure that it is in good working condition.
  • Operate cranes or other heavy machinery to move materials around the jobsite.
  • Secure loads with ropes, chains, or other bindings before hoisting them into place.
  • Signal operators of crane or other heavy equipment to lift or move loads.
  • Tag all defective equipment and remove it from service until it can be repaired.

Objectives

  • To help with the set up and take down of stage equipment for events such as concerts, theatre shows and festivals.
  • To safely transport and operate rigging equipment such as winches, pulleys and scaffolding.
  • To liaise with event staff to ensure that all equipment is in place and ready for use.
  • To carry out regular maintenance checks on all rigging equipment.
  • To be aware of health and safety regulations surrounding the use of rigging equipment.

Rigger Job Skills & Qualifications Needed

  • There are no specific qualifications required to become a rigger, although most rigging jobs will require at least a high school diploma. Many riggers learn their trade through onthe-job training, although some may receive formal education or training through technical schools or community colleges. Riggers must be able to understand and follow complex instructions, and they must have the strength and coordination to safely lift and move heavy objects.
