The Occupational Therapy Technician will provide direct patient care services under the supervision of a licensed occupational therapist. The technician will work with patients to help them regain independence and improve their quality of life. Duties may include providing therapeutic treatments, helping patients with exercises, and teaching patients how to use adaptive equipment. The technician will also maintain treatment records and perform administrative tasks as needed.

Occupational Therapy Technician Job Responsibilities

  • Assist patients in performance of daily living activities, such as bathing, dressing, and eating.
  • Help patients improve their ability to perform tasks in their home or workplace.
  • Provide support and encouragement to patients as they regain skills or learn new ones.
  • Record progress notes and communicate with occupational therapist about patient's progress.
  • Carry out treatments prescribed by occupational therapist, such as exercises, stretching, and massage.
  • Clean and maintain therapy equipment and supplies.

  • There are no formal qualifications required to become an occupational therapy technician, although most employers will require at least a high school diploma. Some onthe-job training may be required. Many occupational therapy technicians choose to pursue voluntary certification through the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA).
