Flagger Job Responsibilities

  • Holds or waves a flag to stop, direct, warn, or control traffic.
  • May be stationed near construction sites, highway maintenance areas, at the scenes of accidents or fires, or at other locations where temporary traffic control is required.
  • Uses hand signals, flags, lanterns, and stoplights to direct motorists around work zones.
  • Informs motorists of detours and alternate routes during road closures due to construction or emergencies.
  • May collect tolls or fees from motorists.
  • May occasionally perform manual labor tasks such as shoveling snow or picking up debris in work zones
