A construction worker is responsible for a variety of tasks on construction sites. They may operate heavy machinery, such as excavators or bulldozers, or they may perform manual labor tasks, such as digging trenches or mixing concrete. Construction workers must be able to follow instructions from their supervisors and work safely around other workers and equipment.

Construction Worker Job Responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain a variety of hand, power, and shop tools.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and specifications.
  • Perform masonry work including bricklaying, plastering, tiling, etc.
  • Erect scaffolding and ladders for use in construction.
  • Shovel cement or other materials into wheelbarrows and push them to the worksite.
  • Mix concrete using hoes, rakes, power mixers, or shovels.
  • Apply mortar to block joints using brushes or trowels.
  • Build wooden forms for poured concrete walls, floors, columns or roofs.
  • Install reinforcement steel bars (rebar) in forms before pouring concrete to reinforce the structure.
