The Sewing Machine Operator is responsible for operating sewing machines to join, decorate, or perform related sewing operations on a variety of articles. The operator feeds materials into the machine and controls the operation of the machine.

Sewing Machine Operator Job Responsibilities

  • Operate sewing machines to sew various garments and fabric items.
  • Read and follow patterns and instructions to ensure proper construction of each item.
  • Select appropriate fabrics and materials for each project.
  • Position and align fabric pieces under the needle before starting to sew.
  • Guide fabric through the machine while sewing, making sure all seams are straight and even.
  • Stop sewing at the end of each seam or pattern section, cut threads, and move on to the next step in the process.
  • Inspect finished items for flaws or defects, make repairs as necessary

Objectives

  • Operate sewing machines to stitch together fabric, leather, or other materials.
  • May feed material into machine, change needles and thread, or adjust tension and timing controls to regulate speed and stitch density.
  • Inspect goods for defects and ensure that products meet quality standards.

  • In order to be a sewing machine operator, one must have the ability to operate a sewing machine. Some employers may require that candidates have previous experience operating a sewing machine, while others may provide onthe-job training. Candidates should also be able to follow instructions and work with fabrics.
