A pipe layer is responsible for installing and repairing underground piping systems. This may include water, sewer, storm drain, and natural gas lines. Pipe layers must be able to read and interpret blueprints in order to properly install pipes. They use a variety of tools, including shovels, jackhammers, and welding equipment. Pipe layers must be physically fit as the job requires heavy lifting and digging.

Pipe Layer Job Responsibilities

  • Lays pipe for storm or sanitation sewers, drains, and water mains.
  • Excavates trench, using pick and shovel, power trencher, or backhoe.
  • Verifies that alignment and grade of trench are correct.
  • Places pipe in trench according to specifications, using clamps or hand tools to lift and lower pipe into position.
  • May weld pipes together to form complete pipeline system before placing them in the trench
  • Fills trench with sand or gravel by shoveling or operating a wheelbarrow, then tamps earth around the pipe to secure it in place
  • Connects pipes to fixtures such as manholes, hydrants, valves using bolts and wrench
