The Library Assistant is responsible for providing support to patrons in the use of library resources and services. This may include circulation desk duties, providing reference and reader’s advisory assistance, shelving materials, processing new materials, and other tasks as needed. The Library Assistant must possess excellent customer service skills and be able to work independently with little supervision.

Library Assistant Job Responsibilities

Objectives

  • To provide professional and courteous assistance to library patrons in person, by phone, and via email or other electronic means.
  • To shelve materials correctly according to Library of Congress Classification system and maintain the general appearance of library shelves.
  • To retrieve requested materials from the stacks for patrons and staff members.
  • To keep abreast of new additions to the library collection and be familiar with the overall holdings of the library in order to provide accurate information and direction to patrons.
  • To process new materials according to established procedures, including unpacking, labeling, shelving, and inputting data into the library catalog.
  • To assist with special projects as needed, such as collection development or weeding, shelfreading, inventory, etc
