Journeyman Carpenter Job Responsibilities
- Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and sketches to determine specifications and calculate requirements
- Prepare layouts in conformance to building codes, using measuring tools
- Measure, cut, shape, assemble and join materials made of wood, wood substitutes, lightweight steel and other materials
- Construct forms for pouring concrete
- Build scaffolding and ladders for temporary supports
- Install windows, doors, stairs, millwork and hardware
- Inspect and replace damaged framework or other structures
Objectives

- Mark cutting lines on materials, using a pencil, chalk, paintbrush, or spray gun
- Assemble and fasten materials to make frameworks or props using hand tools, power tools, screws, nails, or adhesives
- Build rough wooden structures such as walls, floors, stairways etc.
- Inspect ceiling joists, wall studs, flooring systems and roof framing for alignment and plumbness
- Erect scaffolding and ladders for assembling structures above ground level
- Follow safety rules to protect oneself and others from injuries
Journeyman Carpenter Job Skills & Qualifications Needed
- A journeyman carpenter should have a high school diploma or equivalent, as well as a minimum of four years of carpentry experience. He or she should be proficient in reading blueprints and construction drawings, and have a working knowledge of construction materials, methods, and tools. Journeyman carpenters must also be able to safely lift and carry heavy objects, and perform physical labor for long periods of time.
