Design Drafters work with Architects and Engineers to develop the drawings needed for construction projects. They use computer programs to create two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) models of buildings or parts of buildings. Design Drafters also prepare drawings showing the placement of wiring, plumbing, and other systems in a building.

Design Drafter Job Responsibilities

  • Interpret design concepts from engineers and architects to create detailed drawings.
  • Use computeraided drafting (CAD) software to develop designs.
  • Coordinate with other drafters, engineers, and architects to ensure the accuracy of drawings.
  • Revise drawings based on feedback from engineers, architects, and clients.
  • Prepare construction documents for approval by authorities having jurisdiction (AHJ).
  • Maintain updated knowledge of CAD software and industry standards.
