The Bookbinder will be responsible for the binding of books and other materials using a variety of methods. They will also repair and restore damaged books. The Bookbinder will be required to have good manual dexterity, an eye for detail, and patience.

Bookbinder Job Responsibilities

  • Receive and examine books and other items to be bound
  • Determine type of binding required
  • Measure spine of book to determine width of binding material needed
  • Cut binding material to size
  • Apply adhesive to binding material
  • Attach endpapers to book's cover boards
  • Place book block (text block) into adhesive on binding strip
  • Close book by pressing pages together until adhesive dries
  • Trim excess binding material from edges of book

Bookbinder Job Skills & Qualifications Needed

  • To be a bookbinder, you will need to have good manual dexterity, as well as experience in bookbinding and/or other crafts such as sewing. You should also be able to follow instructions carefully and have a good eye for detail.
